Pete Townshend Biography

Was a member of The Who from 1963-82; the group's first recording was in 1964. He has written and published hundreds of songs, many of which have been chart hits. He has composed several major collections that have won international recognition; Tommy is the best known. Awarded the Ivor Novello Award; the British Phonographic Industry Award; inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; nominated for an Academy Award (for the Tommy film score); Tony Award for Best Original Score for Tommy on Broadway; Grammy Award for the original cast recording CD of Tommy on Broadway. Among recordings with The Who (1965-82): My Generation, Who's Next, Tommy and Quadrophenia. Solo (1980-93): Empty Glass, White City, Iron Man, PsychoDerelict. He has published Horse's Neck (a book of short stories). Still active as a songwriter and performer, he now concentrates on dramatic music projects for theatre and film. He has three children and lives in the U.K.
