“Die Fledermaus” at Stony Hill Players

“Die Fledermaus”
Music by Johann Strauss
Lyrics by Karl Haffner & Richard Genèe

Johann Strauss' operetta is half sung, half spoken. The story tells of Dr. Falke, who was once tricked by Baron von Eisenstein into walking the streets of Vienna, dressed as a Fledermaus (a bat). Falke realizes his revenge by inviting philanderer Eisenstein to a party attended by lots of beautiful women and a disguised Mrs. Eisenstein. The story is a perennial comedy favorite and turns on the hero's bungled attempt to revive his tired marriage by conducting an affair. Taking revenge, mistaken identity, and champagne are all mixed together in generous portions to highlight a man's weaknesses.
